The Business Problem When the first global Intranet of one of Washington’s major law firm’s was launched, it was well ahead of its time in terms of technology, knowledge sharing and making custom-built and 3rd party resources available firm-wide. After six years and significant improvements in available Intranet solutions, it was time to move to a standardized, integrated platform. The Articulated Solution Working with the firm’s information management team and senior business owners, Articulated Impact completed discovery and planning efforts to migrate the firm’s aging, multiple-technology Intranet to Microsoft SharePoint. Key requirements included shifting the content publishing responsibilities to respective departments, automating firm-wide news distribution and interconnecting data sources into meaningful management-level views of organizational information and news. After the initial stages Articulated Impact worked with firm personnel to develop a standardized, firm-wide taxonomy to both organize knowledge and support a versatile security group structure. Once the groundwork was complete, custom web site and web page templates were created to allow for quick, easy and consistent Intranet site development. Included in the templates are significant improvements to SharePoint’s native site navigation capabilities, allowing users to intuitively reach any section of the Intranet or the site they are browsing from any page in the system. The Business Impact This firm-wide portal was launched in February of 2006, and has already enjoyed success in allowing for rapid site development and design revisions. Specific office, practice group, administrative department and specialized sites are being developed and published at a solid, steady pace. With minimal or no training, departments are already adding and updating content themselves at their own convenience. Additionally, the solution has allowed for flexible integration of specific security and reporting functions. |
